WEEKLY COLUMN  By Deigo Mack   “True hope is swift, and flies with swallow's wings.”  ―   William Shakespeare Last week in Oklahoma City, during an OKC Thunder NBA game, play-by-play announcer Brian Davis, said during a broadcast that OKC’s star player Russell Westbrook was "out of his cotton-picking mind" after he made his ninth assist halfway through the second quarter of the team's final regular-season game.  This slip of the tongue brought about a one game suspension for OKC’s experienced announcer Brian Davis.  What a shame? The offensive statement set off a chain of reactions.   First, Davis apologized publicly for his insensitive phrase. In a statement to ESPN, Davis apologized for using the phrase, which drew criticism for its racial undertones. Today in the United States of America, there seems to be a growing consensus against gun violence.  Lately, we’ve heard plenty of statements against guns and its lackadaisical laws by everyone from President Obama to inner city politicians.  Our political choir sings a sad tune, as gun violence continues to bite us like a raging anima l.   This ‘Big Bad Wolf’ of handgun tragedy has haunted this country for  50 years.   All you have to do is recall your favorite musician to consider the effects of guns in America. Has anyone ever heard of John Lennon? Marvin Gaye? Selena?  How about Tupac Shakur or Notorious BIG?  Yeah, you get my drift. If you can stand the scent of gunpowder, one can visit sports to find more victims of gun violence. From Jackie Robinson to Jeremy Lin,  New York City has always had its pulse on America’s integrated sports potential.  Love it or hate it, so has New York City media. Combine them and you get something beautiful. Embarrass them and you come up with something ugly. My first example of the latter is a recent article written by Phil Mushnick of the NY Post whom called out Brooklyn Nets owner Jay Z. For some strange reason Phil Mushnick boxed himself in by writing:  “Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!” What would ignite such unprofessional statements?  Being in NY sports for over 25 years, its possible Phil Mushnick covered some of the biggest athletes.
